Painted clay diya
A big clay diya in the look of a gouache painting on warm white cold-press paper: an orange bowl with a maroon foot and white dots round the rim, and a flame in pink, orange and yellow. Small sprigs of marigold sit in the four corners. Bright and homely, it suits a family Diwali party, friends coming over or a children's evening of diyas and rangoli.

Making it yours
The text goes on the open paper under the diya, about half the card's height, and stops above the bottom sprigs, so keep the message to two or three lines. Its script title and spaced small capitals come from the Elegant style, which this card starts in. Choose Maroon, Kumkum red or Leaf green, colours already on the diya and the leaves. The header symbol is off by default; switch on Ganesh or Om for a more traditional card.
About the craft: Clay diya
Before Diwali, potters across India turn small clay lamps on the wheel by the thousand and fire them, and many families buy new ones every year. A new diya is soaked in water first, so that the clay does not drink the oil, then filled with oil or ghee and given a cotton wick. Many are painted in bright colours with a row of dots round the rim. This design paints one such diya large: an orange bowl, a dotted rim and a flame in pink, orange and yellow.
