Pattachitra Deepavali

A cream centre inside fine Pattachitra borders of flowers and creepers, with small elephants and lamps on stands in the border, in red, ochre, green and black. It has the gentle detail of a hand-painted card, good for a warm or formal Deepavali wish.

Making it yours

The cream centre takes about three-fifths of the card's height, framed on every side, so the text sits like a painted panel under a small diya. Maroon, Kumkum red or Leaf green come straight from the border's colours. Pick Traditional lettering for a formal Deepavali wish, or Modern for a lighter one from friends.

About the craft: Pattachitra

Pattachitra means 'picture on cloth'. In Odisha, especially in the village of Raghurajpur, painters coat cloth with chalk and gum, then paint stories and borders with very fine lines in natural colours: red, yellow, black and white. This design follows that style, with flowering borders, small elephants and lamps around a cream centre.
