Painted akash kandil

A star-shaped akash kandil in a watercolour style on warm white paper, hanging on a thin cord from the top edge: crimson, orange and yellow points with small flower dots, a round flower at the centre and three paper tassels below. Leafy sprigs with yellow berries sit in the corners. Light and cheerful, it suits a Diwali greeting to friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Making it yours

Below the tassels the paper is free for about half the card's height, so a greeting, two lines of message and your name fit comfortably. Pick Maroon for the deep red of the lantern, Kumkum red for a brighter wish, or Dark brown for the quietest look. It opens in the Elegant style with no header symbol; a Diya or Ganesh line can be switched on in the editor.

About the craft: Akash kandil

Akash kandil means 'sky lantern'. In Maharashtra and Goa a lantern goes up outside the door or on the balcony at the start of Diwali and is lit every evening of the festival. Many families still make one at home from bamboo strips and coloured paper, and the five-pointed star with long paper tassels is the best-loved shape. This design paints one star kandil in crimson, orange and yellow, with a flower at its centre and three tassels, hanging from the top of the card.
