Gold foil chopda

An open chopda in gold-foil line art on deep wine maroon: the pages are left blank, and a garland of marigolds with a few leaves hangs across the top of the book, with gold dots scattered around it. It is the account book traders worship at Diwali before the new year's accounts begin, which makes it a fitting Saal Mubarak or Nutan Varsh greeting for business families, elders and relatives.

Making it yours

The greeting sits on the plain maroon under the book, a little over half the card's height, so a new-year wish, a short blessing and your family or firm's name fit easily. Choose Gold foil to match the book, Ivory white for the clearest reading, or Gold for an ivory message under a gold title. The Shree Ganesh line heads the card by default, as it heads the first page of a new chopda, in Gujarati script on Gujarati cards, and the title is written in the flowing script of the Elegant style.

About the craft: Chopda pujan

Chopda pujan is the worship of the new account books at Diwali. Gujarati and Marwari traders buy fresh red-bound chopdas; at the puja the first page is marked with a swastika in kumkum and 'Shree Ganeshaya Namah', often with Shubh and Labh, and the books are offered flowers and a garland before the new year's accounts begin. In Maharashtra the custom is called vahi pujan. This design draws an open chopda in fine gold lines, its pages still blank, under a marigold garland.
