Painted aarti thali

An aarti thali in the look of a gouache painting on warm white paper: a clay diya with a tall flame, a bowl of red kumkum, a heap of rice, marigolds and pink flowers, and two round ladoos on a plate with a scalloped red and orange rim. Sprigs of marigold and pink blossoms sit in the four corners. A sister sets out just this for the tilak, so it suits a Bhai Dooj wish to a brother or sister who lives far away.

Making it yours

Your message has the paper below the thali, a little under half the card's height and clear of the corner sprigs, so there is room to name your brother or sister, say a word about growing up together and sign off. Kumkum red is the colour of the tilak, Maroon the deep red of the rim, and Leaf green the leaves on the plate. The card opens in the Elegant style with the header symbol off, and a round picture of you both can sit above the title.

About the craft: Aarti thali

On Bhai Dooj a sister gets an aarti thali ready for her brother: a lit diya, kumkum or roli for the tilak, a few grains of rice, flowers and sweets. She marks his forehead with the tilak and rice, circles the lamp before him and feeds him a sweet, praying for his long life, and he gives her a gift in return. In Marathi the circling of the lamp is called ovalne, and the brother's gift ovalni. This design paints such a thali with a clay diya, kumkum, rice, marigolds and two ladoos.
