Ajrakh Saal Mubarak

An Ajrakh border of stars and lattices in madder red and indigo-black around plain off-white cotton, with small round mirrors stitched at the inner corners, as on Kutchi textiles. Its Gujarati roots make it a fitting Saal Mubarak card.

Making it yours

The cotton field inside the border is tall but narrow, a little over half the card's width, so short lines such as Saal Mubarak and your family name look best. Choose Kumkum red, Indigo or Dark brown for the text. On Gujarati cards the Shree Ganesh line is written in Gujarati script.

About the craft: Ajrakh

Ajrakh is block-printed cloth from Kutch in Gujarat and from Sindh. Printers stamp geometric stars and lattices with carved wooden blocks and dye the cloth over many stages, with indigo and madder red as the classic colours. Each block leaves small offsets that give the cloth its hand-made feel. This design takes an Ajrakh border in red, indigo and off-white around a plain centre.
