About this style

Aipan is the ritual floor and wall art of Kumaon, in Uttarakhand, drawn by the women of the house for festivals and family ceremonies. The surface is first coated with geru, a brick-red earth, and the designs are drawn over it in biswar, a paste of soaked rice ground with water, using the last three fingers of the hand. The patterns are built from lines, dots and simple shapes: chowkis, the square seats drawn for a deity; the footprints of Lakshmi, walking in from the door to the place of worship at Diwali; and vasudhara, rows of vertical lines that run down the walls and doorways.

This film draws Aipan for Bhai Dooj: vasudhara lines run down the doorway, a lotus chowk is drawn from its centre outward, Ganesh sits in a chowki of dots, and your family photo is set inside a square chowk border on the red floor. The patterns are drawn in the Aipan style for this film; they are not drawn by the women of Kumaon.
