Madhubani, or Mithila, painting comes from the Mithila region of Bihar, around the town of Madhubani, and from the neighbouring Terai of Nepal. It was painted by the women of the household on freshly plastered walls and floors for weddings and festivals, with fingers, twigs and bamboo pens dipped in colours made from plants, flowers and soot. Figures are drawn in outline, often with a double line, and every gap is filled with fine patterns of lines and dots. Fish, a symbol of luck and fertility, peacocks, lotuses and the sun and moon appear again and again. Since the 1960s the paintings have also been made on paper, and Madhubani painting has a Geographical Indication.
In this film Lakshmi, a pair of fish and a peacock are drawn in ink lines and filled with flat colour on a cream ground, with a border of lotuses and fish below. The artwork is drawn in the Madhubani style for this film; it is not painted by Mithila artists. Your names and message follow.
