About this style

Paithani is the silk sari of Paithan, an old town on the Godavari in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. Its motifs are tapestry-woven by hand: the weaver interlocks short lengths of coloured silk with the gold zari weft one thread at a time, so the pattern is the same on both sides of the cloth and every edge steps like a staircase. The body is often shot silk, with the warp and the weft in two colours, and the pallu carries the best-known motifs: the peacock (mor), the parrot (muniya) and the flowering vine called asavali. Many Maharashtrian brides and mothers still keep a Paithani for the biggest days.

In this film the sari is woven on screen: Ganesh appears row by row in a round zari medallion, the family photo sits in a frame cut from a Paithani border, two parrots land on the pallu, and the details sit under a woven row of faral: chakli, karanji, ladoo and shankarpali, the sweets and savouries families make and share at Diwali. The weave is drawn in the Paithani style for this film; it is not woven by the weavers of Paithan.
