About this style

Sanskar Bharati rangoli is a free-hand style of floor rangoli that spread across Maharashtra from the 1980s through the cultural organisation Sanskar Bharati. Instead of joining a grid of dots, the artist lets white rangoli powder fall from a closed fist, so the lines come out thick and rounded, swelling and thinning with the hand, and draws large flowing motifs round a circle: lotus petals, kairi, conches, fronds and dots pressed with the fist. The spaces between the white lines are then filled with flat colour powder. These big circles are drawn at doorsteps and in courtyards for Gudi Padwa and Diwali, often by a group working together through the night.

This film is drawn in the Sanskar Bharati style: the big circle at the foot of the frame is poured line by line in white as the invitation unfolds, each line swelling and thinning like powder let fall from the fist, and its colours are poured in under the message. Ganesh is drawn in rangoli too. The artwork is made for this film; it is not drawn on a floor.
