The akash kandil, or sky lantern, is a familiar sign of Diwali in many Maharashtrian homes. It is hung outside the house or on the balcony as the festival approaches and kept lit through the evenings. The traditional kandil is a star-shaped lantern made of a bamboo frame covered in coloured paper, with a long tail of paper streamers and a lamp or bulb inside. Layered paper-cut art is a separate craft that shares the material: coloured paper is cut and layered so that each layer throws a small shadow on the one behind it, and the picture looks deep although it is flat.
This film is made in that style: paper stars, lanterns and flowers, Lakshmi seated on her lotus, and sparklers and anaar fountains lit over a street of tiled houses. An anaar is a firework that throws up a fountain of sparks from a small pot, and a phuljhadi is the hand-held sparkler. The artwork is drawn in the paper-cut style and is not cut from paper. Your message is set over the night sky.
