About this style

Pichwai are large paintings on cloth that hang behind the image of Shrinathji in the temple at Nathdwara in Rajasthan, the centre of the Pushtimarg tradition. The word means ‘that which hangs at the back’. The painters of Nathdwara change the pichwai with the seasons and festivals, and the lotus-pond pichwai, known as kamal talai, is one of the best loved: pink and white lotuses, round green leaves, swans and fish on dark water. The colours are traditionally made from minerals and plants, and gold is often added for the jewellery and the halos.

In this film the lotus pond becomes the Diwali setting: strings of lotus buds hang down both sides, Ganesh sits in a golden halo and small diyas float among the swans. The artwork is drawn in the Pichwai style for this film; it is not painted by the artists of Nathdwara. Your family photo, names and message appear inside the same painted frame.
