Clay is part of Diwali in many homes. Potters make the clay lamps and the small figures of Lakshmi and Ganesh that families buy for the puja, and in Maharashtra children build a toy fort, a killa, from clay and soil in the days before Diwali and fill it with little clay figures. Claymation is the film craft made from the same material: a figure is shaped from modelling clay, moved a tiny amount, photographed, moved again, and the photographs are played back at 12 to 24 a second so that the clay seems to walk. The slight wobble from frame to frame is part of its charm.
This film imitates that look: Ganesh is set down, kandils swing, children run in with sparklers and an anaar erupts as the invitation drops into place. The artwork imitates the look of clay animation for this film. Your photo, names and message follow.
