The pols of old Ahmedabad are the walled city's neighbourhoods: a narrow lane behind a gateway, lined with tall houses that share their walls, a chabutro, a carved bird-feeder on a pillar, in the little square, and families who have lived side by side for generations. Many pol houses have timber fronts carved by Gujarati woodcarvers, with bracket figures, flowered panels, scalloped arches and jharokhas, the balconied windows that lean out over the lane. In 2017 UNESCO named the historic city of Ahmedabad a World Heritage City, and its pols are much of the reason.
In this film a pol gets ready for the society's Diwali: Ganesh is lowered onto a carved lintel with a toran of mango leaves swinging beneath him, the two carved shutters of a jharokha swing open on your family photo, a saathiya is drawn as the title lands, and the details are framed in carved teak under a fresh toran. The artwork is drawn in the carved pol-house style for this film; it is not carved by Ahmedabad's woodcarvers. Your photo, names and message appear on the indigo wall.
