Sanjhi is the art of cutting paper stencils, kept alive in the temples and homes of Mathura and Vrindavan in Braj. Tradition says that Radha first made sanjhi, arranging flowers on the ground to please Krishna, and in the temples of Vrindavan sanjhi is still made every year in the fortnight before Navratri. The stencils are cut from paper by hand, with fine scissors, into a lace of gardens, birds, pavilions and scenes from Krishna's life. A stencil is laid on the floor or another smooth surface, coloured powder is sprinkled through its holes, and then the paper is lifted away, leaving the picture behind in colour.
In this film the stencils are white paper lace laid on rani pink paper. Lakshmi's stencil is laid down, colour is sprinkled through it and the paper lifts away to leave her drawn in powder; your family photo sits in a lace frame, and lamps and peacocks are cut to go with the invitation. The lace is drawn in the Sanjhi style for this film; it is not cut by the sanjhi artists of Mathura and Vrindavan.
