Tanjore, or Thanjavur, painting comes from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and grew under the Nayak and Maratha rulers, who governed the region from the 16th to the 19th century. The picture is painted on a wooden panel covered with cloth. A paste of chalk and gum is built up in low relief for the crown, jewellery and arches, and thin sheets of gold leaf are pressed onto it, sometimes with small pieces of glass or stone set in. A deity is usually shown at the centre of an arch, and Lakshmi is a favourite subject. Thanjavur painting has a Geographical Indication.
In this film Lakshmi sits inside a gilded arch, brass lamps are lit wick by wick, light runs across the gold, and a procession of elephants and parrots passes below. The artwork is drawn in the Tanjore style for this film; no gold leaf is used. Your photo, names and message follow.
