About this style

Patola is the double ikat silk of Patan in north Gujarat, woven for centuries by a few families of the Salvi community. Before a single thread reaches the loom, both the warp and the weft are tied in tiny bundles and dyed colour by colour, following a design worked out in advance, so that the pattern appears only when the dyed threads cross exactly in place as the cloth is woven. One sari can keep a pair of weavers busy for months. The motifs sit in a strict diagonal grid: elephants, parrots, flowers, dancing women and the basket pattern called chhabdi, and every edge keeps the soft feathered blur that marks true ikat.

In this film the patola is woven on screen: Ganesh in a stepped diamond, the photo frame and two elephants come into register as their dyed rows slide together and lock, two parrots circle in to perch beside Ganesh, and the borders around your words are woven out from the centre both ways. The artwork is drawn in the Patola style for this film; it is not woven by the Salvi weavers of Patan. Your photo, names and message sit on plain emerald silk.
