About this style

Warli painting comes from the Warli people of the Sahyadri hills in Maharashtra, mostly in Palghar and Thane districts. It is painted on the mud walls of houses in white rice paste against a red-brown background of earth, using a bamboo stick chewed at the end as a brush. The pictures are built from a circle, a triangle and a square, and a person is drawn as two triangles joined at the tip. Painted above all for weddings, the scenes show farming, animals, trees and dancers in a ring, with the tarpa, a wind instrument made from a dried gourd, played at the centre.

In this film the same white-on-red style carries a Diwali night: dancers circle Ganesh with a tarpa player among them, kandils hang overhead, and children run in with sparklers. The artwork is drawn in the Warli style for this film; it is not painted by Warli artists. Your photo, names and message follow on the same earth-red wall.
