Faral kitchen

A Maharashtrian kitchen painted in flat gouache, like a Diwali-ank cover: copper and brass on the shelf, a photo on the wall, and steel tins whose lids pop off to show the faral.

About this style

Every Diwali the Marathi Diwali-ank, the special Diwali issues of magazines, come out with painted covers; the tradition began in 1909 with the magazine Manoranjan. Many of the best-loved covers were painted in gouache, an opaque watercolour laid in flat, matte fields with one darker tone for shade, so that a cover reads clearly from across a bookstall. The kitchen is a favourite subject at this time of year, because Diwali in a Maharashtrian home begins there: days before the festival the family fries chakli and karanji, rolls ladoos and cuts shankarpali, and the faral is stored in steel tins next to the copper and brass vessels on the shelf.

This film paints such a kitchen: an indigo limewash wall, a shelf of copper and brass, Ganesh on a red paat, a family photo hung on a nail, and three tins whose lids pop off to show the faral. Your invitation is written on a wall calendar, where a Maharashtrian kitchen keeps the dates of the year. The art is drawn in the gouache Diwali-ank cover style for this film; it is not a cover from any magazine.
