About this style

In Pune and Mumbai many families live in cooperative housing societies, blocks of flats round a shared compound with a gate, a watchman and a notice board. At Diwali the building changes: an akash kandil goes up at almost every balcony, each family's own, paper stars, octagons and hexagons with long tails, and the society often gathers in the compound for a Diwali programme of rangoli, snacks and music announced on the notice board. Seen from the road at dusk, a society with its kandils lit floor by floor is one of the most familiar sights of a Maharashtrian Diwali.

This film is drawn in the layered paper-cut style: a four-storey Pune society against a dusk skyline with Parvati hill, twelve kandils that light up one after another on a tasha roll, a balcony window for your family photo and the society notice board for the details. The artwork is drawn for this film and is not cut from paper.
