About this style

Kangra painting is the best-known school of Pahari miniature painting, from the hill kingdoms of what is now Himachal Pradesh. It grew from the workshop of the painters Manaku and Nainsukh of Guler and flowered at the court of Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra, who reigned from 1775 to 1823. The painters worked on burnished paper with fine squirrel-hair brushes and colours ground from minerals and plants, in cool, clear tones. Their favourite subject was the love of Radha and Krishna from the Gita Govinda and the Bhagavata Purana, set among rolling green hills, plantain trees and white palace terraces, often at dusk or by lamplight, inside a painted border.

This film is one such page: a white palace terrace at dusk where women set rows of diyas on the parapet for Diwali Milan, Ganesh with a pale halo, your family photo inside the blue painted border, and the invitation on the evening sky. The paintings are drawn in the Kangra style for this film; they are not by the miniature painters of the hills.
