Rangoli is the pattern drawn on the floor at the doorstep or in the courtyard to welcome guests and, at Diwali, to welcome Lakshmi. It is made with coloured powder, rice flour or flower petals, and the same art has different names across India: kolam in Tamil Nadu, alpana in Bengal, muggu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and rangoli in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the north. Small footprints leading in from the door are drawn for Lakshmi as she enters the house, and diyas are set along the edges when the pattern is finished.
In this film the footprints walk across a stone courtyard, a rangoli grows ring by ring around your family photo, and then the diyas light up. The artwork is drawn in the rangoli style for this film; no powder was laid. Your message, date and venue follow once the pattern is complete.
